“Sweetest Pie” is the highly-anticipated debut collaboration between Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion and UK pop princess Dua Lipa, and is also the first single from Megan’s upcoming second album.
The track takes the shape of a catchy, upbeat, and sultry pop song, with both Meg and Dua radiating confidence and owning their sexuality via their lyrics—which also make use of dessert euphemisms. The music video (which was conceptualized by Megan herself) juxtaposes beautiful things with horrific things, which is apt given the overall sweet but dangerous theme.
It’s a horror twist on things that are typically meant to be pretty lol https://t.co/SyV5h5YJd4
After teasing that they may work together for months before—on March 5, 2022, Megan changed her social media profile pictures to herself with the same confectionary beehive hairstyle that appears in the single cover. The next day, both her and Dua confirmed the rumours, officially announcing that “Sweetest Pie” was set to drop on March 11, 2022. Promotion continued in the days up to the release, until the music video was unveiled at the same time as the song at midnight EST on Friday.
I be seeing everybody making mash-ups of me and Dua songs and I’m like, ‘No, this sounds too good. We have to make a song.‘ So when I hit her up about it, I was like, ‘Dua, I really want us to do a song, but I got to find that right beat. It has to be perfect.’ So I didn’t just send her any track, I waited till I had the perfect one, and I feel like we both came to a mutual agreement that it was greatness.
This year with my collabs, I want it to be very organic to me, very organic to whoever I’m collaborating with. And I want us to both really thrive on it and really shine.
Responding to a fan on Twitter, Megan said:
The symbolism of the video was how when men come for me I eat they ass up every time and even when y’all go on y’all’s witch hunts attacking women for whatever reasons y’all make up we still rise from the ashes stronger than ever🖤 https://t.co/ImZCE9qgeL
